According to @surging news reports, an asteroid will pass by the earth this week, and it is expected to be the largest asteroid close to the earth in 2022.
According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Center for Near-Earth Object Research,The asteroid, named 1989 JA, is about 1.77 kilometers in diameter.
If the buildings on Earth are used as a reference, this asteroid is twice the size of the Burj Khalifa (the Burj Khalifa), the tallest building in the world.
According to NASA, there are nearly 29,000 near-Earth asteroids in space, but only 878 asteroids over 1 kilometer in diameter, and 1989 JA is one of them.
Frank Marchis, chief scientific officer of the Cosmic Telescope Corporation and senior planetary astronomer at the SETI Institute, revealed,The asteroid traveled at about 48,280 kilometers per hour, 17 times the speed of a bullet in the air.
At this speed, the asteroid could orbit the Earth in 45 minutes.
It is also worth mentioning that, according to previous CCTV news reports, Wu Yanhua, deputy director of the National Space Administration, said,my country will set up a near-Earth asteroid defense system to jointly deal with the threat of near-Earth asteroid impacts and contribute to the protection of the earth and human security.
