Today, the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi says that they are entering into a strategic partnership to develop mobile cameras with Leica Camera. The first flagship telephone developed in collaboration between the two companies will be officially launched in July.
Xiaomi was founded as late as 2010, Leica has been running well much longer than that and has been manufacturing cameras for over 100 years. Exactly what the collaboration will mean remains to be seen, however, it is not entirely impossible that it will be something like OnePlus’ collaboration with Hasselblad where the Swedish camera manufacturer had kind of helped with the color reproduction. Leica’s CEO Matthias Harsch says:
“It is an honor to announce the long-term strategic partnership with Xiaomi today. Leica and Xiaomi are both global premium brands, and during this unprecedented deep collaboration process, both parties have gradually worked towards the goal of offering customers a new era of mobile photography. We are convinced “that the first jointly developed flagship telephone will highlight the groundbreaking advances of companies. We will provide consumers with exceptional image quality, classic Leica aesthetics, unlimited creativity, and usher in a new era of mobile photography.”
