But Square Enix took the project back to Japan.
Swedish Embracer now owns the developer Eidos Montreal, but before that it was Square Enix who bossed them. The studio has, among other things, produced the last two Deus Exgames as well Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxyand according to a former employee, they could have had another really big game on the merit list.
In a interview with Trueachievements, Jonathan Jacque-Belletête – former executive art director at the studio – says that Square Enix at one point commissioned them to develop the then problematic Final Fantasy XV (or at least develop a “pitch”).
Jacque-Belletête is sparing with the details, but says they tried to do Final Fantasy XV, but that Square Enix later decided to take the project back to Japan, which he thinks is a shame, because their game was “really, really cool”. Youtube canapé Superbunnyhop reported several years ago about the project, and then said that it was a space opera
In the end, it was Business Division 2 at Square Enix that made the game, and it got a really good reception.
