While after the announcement of the new WoW expansion (almost) all eyes are on the new areas, the talent trees and the Dracthyr, frequent twinkers and potential returnees are asking themselves: will the level phase change with the release of Dragonflight? It should be clear that the developers are not planning a fundamental overhaul of the old zones as with Cataclysm. But what about Shadowlands and Chromie-Time?
New players start on the island, veterans choose via Chromie-Time
The short answer to this question is: Hardly anything changes. This was confirmed by senior quest designer Jackie Wiley and game director Ion Hazzikostas in, among others an interview with Blizzplanet. Basically, players can still use Chromie Time to level up their characters in Dragonflight. With the new expansion, the leveling phase via the feature will last from level 1 to 60 in the future, which means that we can also choose the Shadowlands content for leveling a character.
The level experience for new players and characters otherwise remains almost untouched. Wiley said:
“[…] new players are sent from the Isle of the Exiled to BFA and then to the Dragon Isles. More experienced players, i.e. those who have brought at least one character to max level, can use Chromie-Time to level up in Draneor or Pandaria or Shadowlands, for example. But for new players, it’s going to the Exiled Isle, to BFA, to the Dragon Isles.”
Anyone brand new to WoW (buy now ) starts or returns to the game and has not yet maxed out a character, so start on the Exiled Isle, level up through Battle for Azeroth, and then dive into the new Dragonflight content. Ion Hazzikostas once again explicitly confirmed that Shadowlands will be available as an expansion in Chromie-Time for the level phase.
At some point no more level phase? Hazzikostas: “We’re talking about it”
Hazzikostas also emphasized that the developers are aware of the fact that the maximum level could eventually reach a number in the triple digits again:
“[…] we know we’ll be back in the triple digits in 2030 or so and what that means and how to prevent the same problems from happening again. […] I think I’d like to find a perfect solution for this someday. We’ve definitely toyed with the idea of what it would look like if we added no or fewer levels with an expansion, but levels give so much to us and any RPG, there’s a reason they’ve stood the test of time, and they are just a straight path to more power, new stuff to look forward to, new talent points now too, so to say we’re going to stop doing that would raise a lot of questions for which we need to find satisfactory answers, but we’ll move on talk about.”
Maybe the developers will turn the leveling process in WoW upside down again with a future expansion. Until then, everything will remain the same with Dragonflight, at least for now. What do you think about that? What adjustments would you like to see in the future? Write us your opinion in the comments!
