On several occasions over the past year, SpaceX representatives have hinted at an intention to offer Wi-Fi connectivity on board jetliners by relying on the satellite internet service provided by Starlink.
Founder and boss of SpaceX, Elon Musk had notably announced ongoing discussions with airlines for a Starlink installation, and by dangling low latency with a ” half-gigabit in-flight connectivity. “
More recently, it was Jonathan Hofeller, vice president of commercial sales of Starlink at SpaceX, who spoke about the connectivity on board airliners with the testing of several prototypes and the certification phases engaged.
Delta Air Lines confirms tests for Starlink
Boss of the American airline Delta Air Lines, Ed Bastian has just confirmed to the wall street journal that exploratory tests of Starlink’s technology have been carried out. However, he does not go into details.
Last month, Delta Air Lines announced that more than 300 of its aircraft are currently equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity and with a solution based on Viasat satellite Internet. If necessary, Starlink will therefore have serious competition, especially since the airline plans to have more than 500 aircraft equipped by the end of the year.
It is for Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft that Elon Musk expects to obtain certification in order to use the Starlink solution.
