For far too long fans had to wait for Kingdom Hearts 3 and in the end it was a disappointment for many – myself included. Kingdom Hearts 4 probably won’t be that long in coming, and probably won’t make the same mistakes either. Yes, I’m almost certain that if you thought Kingdom Hearts 3 was stupid, you might love Kingdom Hearts 4. A comment.

Kingdom Hearts 3: The game that just wouldn’t come out

Almost 15 years passed between Kingdom Hearts 2 and Kingdom Hearts 3. One of the reasons for this was that the creator of the motley JRPG series was working on a Final Fantasy game that Kingdom Hearts 4 now looks damn similar to.

After several spin-offs relevant to the story, Kingdom Hearts 3 was finally announced in 2013. Yes development was chaotic and in the middle they even switched to the Unreal Engine 4.

What’s wrong with Kingdom Hearts 3?

Kingdom Hearts 3 is off to a good start. Right at the beginning, the journey leads to the Hecules world of Olympus, where you climb a mountain, save a burning city and hunt down colossi in the eponymous Olympus.

But with the following worlds, Kingdom Hearts 3 shows its true colors. Most worlds bluntly retell the plots of the Disney films; Sora and the gang have no meaning in the respective story. Previous games in the series were better at that.

In general, the Disney worlds don’t advance the story of Kingdom Hearts 3 a bit. Instead of this slow down the action, which fans have had to wait too long for. Someone at Disney must have been keen to prevent the popular Disney worlds, like The icequeen or Rapunzel, experienced too big changes. However, this damaged the pacing of the story quite a bit, because it only got really exciting towards the end. And as if that wasn’t agony enough, the last two Disney worlds fall comparatively massive in size out of.

I don’t even want to start with the villains. The occasional Organization 13 performances seem ridiculous, compared to the menacing nature they have in Kingdom Hearts 2. They don’t seem like a threat, at least not for the first 20-30 hours of the game.

Only the gameplay could turn things around and while there are good approaches, you don’t get anywhere near the same level of sophistication as Kingdom Hearts 2. With too many gameplay mechanics will you be confronted some of them are even annoying or just too strong. And I don’t just mean the over-spawning, full-screen Disney attractions – but I mean them in particular. And even if you don’t use them, the game remains on the hardest difficulty (Crictical mode was missing at the release) a cakewalk.

Kingdom Hearts 4 could do a lot better

Kingdom Hearts 4 has only just finished one trailer and yet I can confidently say: The next part will not make the same mistakes. I get that feeling just by listening to the first few lines from the trailer.

If this isn’t the ending you wanted. If it makes you despair Then leave this world for another.

As if Tetsuya Nomura, the mastermind behind Kingdom Hearts, was speaking directly to his fans who were disappointed with Kingdom Hearts 3 but will soon be able to experience a new, better world.

In the trailer, you see Sora fighting a Shadowborn in a Tokyo-themed city – and a new, more realistic look you also missed the series. Apparently they are moving away from Disney’s animated films, at least with this part. That should make a nice change.

In addition, the fresh approach also allows new characters from the Final Fantasy universe that were missing entirely in Kingdom Hearts 3. In general, the story and characters in Kingdom Hearts 4 should have it easier, since the next part fewer loose ends need to merge as Kingdom Hearts 3.

Now Kingdom Hearts 4 only has to do without crowded gameplay mechanics and provide more balance. Above all, the level of difficulty must be crisp again.

Attractions will probably not happen again. A fan favorite returns: Because Nomura has confirmed that situational commands become a part of Kingdom Hearts again at the request of fans. Towards the end of the trailer, you can also see Sora using a situational command.

It’s just a matter of pressing a certain key in time to perform a special move or attack. Simple, but in Kingdom Hearts 2 it led to cool staged action sequences.

My only concern is the size of the worlds to come. If Square Enix takes an open-world approach, then it may not too many distractions give in order not to get problems with the pacing again.

It will probably only be new information towards the end of the year give when another trailer will hopefully reveal the next world.
