Face model took negative comments as a compliment

Selene from “Returnal” is no ordinary protagonist. According to the voice actress, the character’s face model took the negative comments about her looks as a compliment.

With Selene, the third-person roguelike “Returnal” has a rather unusual protagonist. Selene Vassos is a middle-aged mother, not a typical character you control in an action game.

As voice actress Jane Perry has now revealed, there have been numerous negative comments about the character’s looks. However, Perry and Selene’s face model, Anne Beyer, had their own way of dealing with this criticism.

Brave heroine in the eyes of players just ugly

“There were some comments on Twitter after the game was released saying oh she’s ugly, she’s not very attractive, I don’t care about her,” said Jane Perry, the voice actress for the main character Selene. “I thought that was an interesting comment that in a way reflects what’s expected of female characters in games. Especially when they’re amazing heroines like Selene. I figured that this person probably thinks that way because they’ve been fed a certain stereotype all the time. And I think when you’re constantly being presented with a certain cliché, you have a certain expectation.”

Perry revealed that Selene’s face model, Anne Beyer, has also had to deal with negative comments about the character’s looks. However, Beyer turned the unflattering comments into something positive. “She shot right back and said, ‘Your comment was really great because I’m actually a model. And in my acting career, I’ve been told too many times that I’m too glamorous and too beautiful. So being able to play Selene was my chance not to be.”

And I’m just like, why the hell not?” voice actress Jane Perry continued. “I know women who are strong and powerful and brave. I have so many women like that in my life.
