Shortly after Putin chose to invade Ukraine, the European Commission asked for a plan to completely phase out its dependence on Russian gas, oil and coal imports. The result was REPowerEU and the idea with this plan is simply to increase the commitment to renewable energy. This through partnerships with companies that deal with such things and a rapid expansion of solar and wind energy projects, combined with renewable hydrogen expansion in the short term.

However, the REPowerEU plan’s biggest focus seems to be solar energy, as they want solar energy to be the largest source of electricity in the EU and for more than half of it to come from rooftops. Solar on the roof will be mandatory for all new public and commercial buildings with usable floor areas larger than 250 square meters in 2026. Already built buildings must install solar panels by 2027 and residential buildings must do so by 2029. For this process to go faster and smoother, solar permits must for ceilings are granted within three months.

The report also mentions the importance of interoperability for connected devices such as batteries and heat pumps. REPowerEU proposes measures such as standardization or open source solutions for digital connections.

It remains to be seen whether the various EU countries can agree and implement the plan, but somewhere it is hoped that they will succeed.
