NASA has invited a number of American companies that it hopes will be able to develop future communication systems that can replace one of the systems that NASA uses for space communications today.
It is the so-called TDRS system, Tracking and Data Relay Satellite, which NASA hopes to eventually be able to scrap and replace with a commercial system. Today, TDRS is used for communications between Earth and the Hubble Space Telescope, the International Space Station ISS and a large number of research satellites. The idea behind hiring commercial companies to build a new communications system is that NASA will not have to do it itself. It is also hoped that NASA will then be able to take part in updates and further developments that the companies will make in their commercial systems in the future.
Initially, NASA plans to invest around $ 280 million in what is called the “Communications Services Project” (CSP). It is expected that the six companies that will now receive money to develop CSP themselves will contribute just as much to develop future communication solutions for space. The six companies that will be involved in developing the first phase of CSP are Inmarsat Government Inc, Kuiper Government Solutions (Amazon), SES Government Solutions, Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), Telesat US Services and Viasat Incorporated.
