Fragbite and the Swedish Chess Federation are now starting what is said to be Sweden’s first sporting sport for chess. The new league has been named “Swedish Chess League” and is now officially started after testing the structure at the end of last year.
The Secretary General of the Swedish Chess Federation, Tomas Kvist, says about the Swedish Chess League:
“It is a great feeling that we are in earnest with a completely new chess concept that can attract thousands of players around Sweden. The Swedish Chess League has huge potential to gather players at all levels.”
To participate in the Swedish Chess League, the player needs to have an account on the chess service Chess.com. The league will have four divisions and arrange competitions four times during the year. Those who collect the most points in the competitions will then be invited to participate in the final. During the league’s first season, SEK 101,000 is in the prize pool.

Interest in Chess is said to have increased during the pandemic, which is partly thought to be due to the fact that we spent more time at home, partly due to the popular Netflix series The Queens Gambit. To give all old and new chess players an opportunity to show themselves, the Swedish Chess Association and Fragbite are now launching the online tournament Swedish Chess League. The Swedish Chess League consists of both qualifiers and playoffs and the tournament is open to everyone to participate in. They play in the format flash arena, which means three minutes of reflection time with two seconds of increment between moves. Erik Malmstig, vice chairman of the Swedish Chess Association says in a press release about the Swedish Chess League: “Finally, it is the premiere for this exciting meeting between two worlds – chess and e-sports. It feels fun to be a part of this venture together with Fragbite . We hope and believe that this new format can do a lot for everyone who has started playing chess during the chess boom of recent years and wants to find more playing opportunities to take their gaming to the next level. ” In total, there is SEK 25,000 in the prize pool in the Swedish Chess League, of which the winner will receive SEK 10,000. To participate, you must have an account on Chess.com, the platform where the tournament will be played.
