They are used to upgrade special weapons (usually those with proper names, such as Bloody Streams, Ice Needle, or Moon Veil) and can level those weapons up to +9. The highest level +10 requires the extremely rare Ancient Dragon Darkforge Stones.

- The easiest way to buy these stones in unlimited quantities is from War Strategist Iji in the Royal Ruins in western Liurnia. He offers them for 2000 runes each.
- After obtaining the Darkstone Miner’s Sonic Bead 1 (in the Sellia Crystal Tunnels after defeating the Starfall Beast) or with Iji’s Sonic Bead, you can also purchase the stones from the Twin Maiden Shells in the Table of Mercy, also for 2000 runes.

- The spider enemies in Caria Manor have a fairly high chance of dropping Forgestones 2.
- Occasionally the miners will drop some in the crystal tunnels of Raya Lucaria.
