It is perhaps the most expensive button in the history of the web. Google has just announced that it will finally comply with European regulations and add a “Reject all” button on the pop-up window relating to cookie choices. Until now, Internet users could only choose between the “I accept” and “Customize” buttons, the latter leading them to a settings page.

According to the CNIL, this way of doing favored acceptance, which was contrary to European law. At the beginning of January, it had therefore imposed on Google a fine of 150 million euros and a penalty of 100,000 euros per day after three months. Which might seem like a lot for a small rectangle. But we must not forget that this “dark pattern” allowed Google to generate a lot of advertising revenue.

In the future, when you go to Google or YouTube in offline mode, you will therefore now have three choices: “Accept all”, “Reject all” and “More options”. Rejecting all will prevent Google from placing cookies on your computer for ad tracking and the display of personalized content. On the other hand, the company may still use cookies necessary for the technical operation of the web pages and for audience measurement.

This update of the cookie window will first be visible in France, before being gradually extended to countries in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Internet users from other countries, on the other hand, will not have access to this new choice.

The big question now: what will Facebook do? The social network had been sanctioned for the same reasons by the CNIL in early January, up to 60 million euros. Here too, Internet users are impatiently awaiting the appearance of a third button.
