It’s no surprise that Android is the most popular mobile operating system in the world as it is available on a huge number of devices. However, StockApps data shows that iOS has taken Android’s market share in recent years, although the Google platform still dominates the market.
As of July 2018, Android held a 77.32% share of the global mobile operating system market. However, four years later, that number dropped to 69.74%. At the same time, global iOS adoption rose from 19.4% to 25.49% over the same period, representing a 6% growth over four years.
While the reasons for these numbers are unclear, Apple is making efforts to expand its product line to reach even more consumers with products such as the iPhone SE and entry-level iPad. However, this will not be enough to take the first place from Android.
As finance expert Edith Reeds points out, Android still has an edge due to its open source nature. While iOS is only available on Apple devices, there are many Android devices out there, not just smartphones and tablets. The price of electronic devices is another reason why Android will remain at the top.
The StockApps study notes that in regions such as South America and Africa, Android significantly dominates the local market as Apple products are much more expensive compared to competitors. In South America, only 10% of mobile devices run iOS, while the Apple operating system has more than half of the market share in North America.
