The streaming provider specializing in anime content has been owned since last year crunchy roll firmly to Sony and also on the PlayStation, the service has been available in the form of an app for a long time. After just a few weeks ago, the company made a massive expansion to its catalogue announced today we would like to give you ten anime tips that you should definitely check out at Crunchyroll.
86 Eighty Six
Let’s start with one of the hit series of the recent past: “86 Eighty Six”. The world of the anime series is at war, as the empire of San Magnolia has long been attacked by an army of the Giadian Empire, consisting of unmanned drones. It is a war without human casualties – or at least that is what the government is trying to convince the population of the 85 districts. Meanwhile, the truth lies in the 86th sector, where people forgotten by society have to fight a brutal struggle for survival every day, in “unmanned” drones.
You can’t expect light fare with this anime, because complex topics such as fascism, war and racism are not only dealt with in detail within the plot, but are also presented bluntly. In our first anime tip, a gripping drama awaits you in terms of audiovisual and staging, which will captivate you from the start and will certainly not let go anytime soon.
A Place Further Than the Universe
In A Place Further Than the Universe we follow high school student Maki who longs for a great adventure. She doesn’t want to waste her youth and become sour in a monotonous everyday life. Fortunately, she meets the lively Shirase, who is dying to travel to Antarctica. Supported by their two friends Hinata and Yuzuku, both of them do everything they can to make their big dream come true. Soon there is no going back for the illustrious group, because the icy South Pole is calling and with it the journey of their young lives.
The series thrives primarily on its four sympathetic and well-written main characters, who not only have to overcome physical but also emotional boundaries. The creators of Studio Madhouse (“Death Note”) managed to strike a good balance between cheerful moments and sometimes surprisingly gripping drama about dreams and growing up. An adventure that is not only visually beautiful.
Attack on Titan
For centuries, humans have not been the dominant species on Earth – quite the opposite. Behind huge walls they seek protection from man-eating titans who force them to live in bird cages. However, one day the outer wall falls and the monsters invade. As a result, young Eren has to deal with a severe blow of fate and swears to take revenge. He wants to join the Scout Regiment, a military unit, to exterminate all Titans with his own hands. But will he and his friends really be able to achieve the freedom they long for?
“Attack on Titan” is, without exaggeration, THE TV series of recent years and has captivated millions of fans worldwide. Because the series is very dark and, within the context of its scenario, grounded, it is wonderfully suited for those who otherwise watch little or no anime. The world is expanded in a comprehensible way, the characters are written in a multifaceted way and the story quickly captivates the viewer with numerous secrets and twists. All this is rounded off with a detailed view of war and freedom as well as a truly visually stunning production that does not have to hide from any other hit series of recent years. An absolute anime tip!
Demon Slayer
Actually, Tanjiro just wanted to go to a nearby village to sell a few things there. When he returns home the next morning, however, his world has changed forever: his family has been slaughtered by a demon and his little sister Nezuko is about to turn into one of the blood-hungry monsters. To avenge the death of his family and find a way to turn his sister back into a human, our young protagonist joins the Demon Slayer Corps.
With the launch of the “Demon Slayer” anime, a huge hype began. The anime series definitely struck a chord with many viewers, and probably mostly because of Tanjiro. He carries a warmth and humanity that is almost contagious. Furthermore, there are always emotionally gripping moments and such impressively staged, choreographed and animated action scenes that you have to experience them yourself to be able to grasp it. Audiovisually, Season 2 has set a new standard within the anime industry that future productions will have to be measured against.
FenaPirate Princess
Orphan girl Fena lives on a small island that would not have a particularly rosy fate in store for her. When she is confronted with her mysterious past, she decides to disappear from the tranquil island. Together with a group of misfits, she ventures out into the world to finally be able to live a life of freedom and to find out what the word “Eden” could mean.
“Fena: Pirate Princess” offers you a charming pirate adventure that will quickly captivate you with its likeable characters. In the later course of the story, however, the creators of the animation studio Production IG (“Ghost in the Shell”) are not afraid to sprinkle new ideas into the series again and again. All this is garnished in the anime tip with really wonderful animations and an atmospheric soundtrack.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War
Both Kaguya and Miyuki are distinguished students at Shuchiin Academy, towering over their fellow students with their excellence. Everyone thinks the two are made for each other, but neither of our main characters wants to show weakness and ask the other out on a date. So they decide to trick the other in a psychological war and get them to go on a date. Who do you think will win?
With “Kaguya-sama: Love is War” we would like to recommend a romance anime that initially comes across as a mental chess game. In fact, what awaits you here is a romantic comedy that boasts some really excellent comedic timing. The great characters in combination with many surprising, sweet as well as dramatic scenes will cast a spell on you and won’t let go anytime soon. One of the best series of recent years awaits fans of the genre in particular.
Megalobox
Joe is a nobody struggling on the streets of Tokyo. One day, however, a completely new perspective opens up for him, because a worn-out boxing trainer recognizes his fighting potential. It doesn’t go particularly well at first, however, because our main character keeps getting into trouble with the law and ultimately ends up in prison. Lucky in misfortune, because there he meets Rikiishi, who finally sparks Joe’s enthusiasm for boxing.
We would also like to recommend a sports anime and “Megalobox” has many strengths that speak for the series. Unlike many similar works, there isn’t always a clear villain here, as many of the boxers that Joe faces in the ring also just want to achieve their dreams. It’s about finding meaning in your life, taking your future into your own hands and never giving up.
New game!
Aoba is fresh out of high school and about to start her first day at work. She landed a job at the small video game development studio Eaglejump Company, which produced one of her favorite games. Now, of all people, the woman who played a key role in shaping this special game is her superior. As part of a small team, Aoba soon works on a new game for the company and learns a lot about her great passion.
We have to disappoint all those who hope for a critical look at the life of a video game developer here. “New Game!” could certainly have been one and also touches on problematic things from time to time, but the focus is rather aside from that. This anime tip is primarily about the journey of the lovable characters who have to grow together in order to finally be able to realize their big dream.
Odd Taxi
Odokawa leads a nondescript life as a taxi driver. He has no family, likes to keep to himself and rarely talks to his passengers. However, the few contacts he has, including with a student and a secretive nurse, seem to be more important than it first appears. All the initially irrelevant details that his clients tell him eventually lead him to the trail of a missing girl.
Shortly after its start in spring 2021, “Odd Taxi” quickly became a viewer favorite and this is probably due in large part to the fact that many situations are very understandable for us viewers. It’s a dark mystery story that keeps you busy trying to figure out how all the characters might be connected, with a dash of comedy on top. An insider tip that is worth a look.
one piece
Monkey D. Luffy has an almost impossible dream: He wants to become the Pirate King! Since Gol D. Roger, the most notorious pirate of all time, confirmed the existence of One Piece, the greatest treasure of all time, the great pirate age began. Together with a powerful crew, Luffy wants to find that legendary treasure and experience all sorts of crazy adventures along the way. But the journey poses many dangers.
“One Piece” is an absolutely exceptional title that began as a relatively small fantasy adventure, but quickly developed into a genuine epic that not only created a powerful, believable world, but also dealt with numerous relevant and complex topics. It’s about freedom, friendship, racism, tyranny, war and peace. Crunchyroll is the only German streaming provider where you can watch all anime episodes released so far, and while the 1000+ episodes may seem very intimidating, you won’t regret embarking on this journey with the Straw Hat Pirates.
Now it’s your turn: Which anime from the Crunchyroll catalog do you recommend? Feel free to tell us in the comments!
