Oppo formalizes the launch of the latest model in its Reno series, the Oppo Reno 7. With a neat design, it focuses particularly on portrait photography and an affordable price.

Oppo is strengthening its mid-range with the launch of the Reno 7. After a start to the year marked by the launch of the Find X5 series, the manufacturer is returning to a series it knows well. The Reno range is already back in France and the launch of the Reno 7 testifies to the brand’s ambition. Fourth seller of smartphones in France, Oppo is accelerating and has decided to review its strategy. Renewed every six months in Asia, the Reno series had taken to taking its time in Europe by skipping a version number. The Reno 5 had never arrived in our regions, unlike the Reno 6.

The Oppo Reno 7 is therefore already there with the ambition to come and compete with Samsung or Xiaomi. The two manufacturers are engaged in a fierce battle in a segment where the quality-price ratio often makes the difference. For its Reno 7, we find the paw of the manufacturer with a neat design and a chassis that relies on finesse. However, the smartphone does not go unnoticed with its black (stellar) and orange (twilight) finishes. The first uses the brand’s “glow” design; while the orange version relies on fiberglass (faux) leather. A “first” in the industry, explains the brand.

On paper, the two variants have a slight difference in thickness; oscillating between 7.54 mm (orange) and 7.49 mm (black). In both cases, we are dealing with a rather thin and light phone (about 175 grams).

A solid base, but no 5G compatibility

Light weight, the Oppo Reno 7 is nonetheless an ambitious smartphone. It revolves around a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen displaying a Full HD + definition. Protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 glass, it offers a refresh rate of 90 Hz; as well as a touch sampling rate of 180 Hz. During its presentation, Oppo told us that the latter could climb to 1,000 Hz in certain games like PUBG.

Under the hood, the Oppo Reno 7 offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chip flanked by 8GB and 128GB of storage. The smartphone retains a microSD slot, allowing the amount of storage to be extended up to 1 TB. In addition to a rather interesting amount of RAM in view of its positioning; Oppo Reno 7 offers RAM expansion technology up to 5 GB.

Despite the development of 5G around the world, we are still limited to 4G. A 4,500mAh battery powers the SuperVooc-enabled Reno 7 at 33W for a full charge in 60 minutes.

Note that charging is done via a USB-C port and that the smartphone retains a 3.5 mm jack.

Focus on portrait photography

The whole thing runs on ColorOS 12, an overlay that allows Oppo to offer home features. The smartphone supports “raised hand gestures” to answer calls or scroll up and down pages. The Reno 7 also takes advantage of certification by ISO, ePrivacy and TrustArc to offer tools such as smart notification hiding. Concretely, the smartphone is able to hide certain elements when it detects the presence of a face other than that of its owner.

Oppo has a habit of emphasizing the photo part and the Reno 7 confirms it. The smartphone has a triple camera consisting of a main sensor of 64 megapixels (f / 1.7, wide-angle); a 2 megapixel (f/2.4) depth sensor and a 2 megapixel microscope lens. Already seen on other models of the brand, this module offers a magnification of x15 or x30.

Note in passing the presence of an orbital light to support the microscope camera, but also to accompany the user on a daily basis. It can be used as an indicator light when a notification is received, or during charging. On the front, a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 camera is available for selfies, the same sensor as on the Find X5 Pro.

In addition to the hardware part, Oppo highlights the software features of the Reno 7. The smartphone is particularly aimed at portrait enthusiasts, thanks to its “Pro portrait mode” or Selfie HDR tools. The first aims to ensure a Bokeh effect with a management of the “flare”, like a digital SLR camera. AI is used during capture and Oppo adds a 108-megapixel Extra-HD mode.

Price and availability

The Oppo Reno 7 arrives in France in its two finishes, at a price of 329.90 euros. It is only available online at Cdiscount and Amazon.
