In World of Warcraft, the dragonflights aka “Dragonflight” represent the types of dragons on Azeroth. In early history, many dragonflights of all colors of the rainbow existed, but there were only five flocks that ruled their brethren. It was these five swarms that the titanic guardians chose to guard the nascent world. The leaders of each group were called the Dragon Aspects, the Great Aspects, or simply the Aspects. The five major dragonflights are identified by their coloring: black, blue, bronze, green, and red.
There are also smaller dragonflights beyond the five main types that are artificial or otherwise unnatural. Since the fall of the black dragon aspect, Deathwing, the dragonflights, including the former aspects and the Keeper of Life, Alexstrasza, have seemingly lost most of their power, along with their ability to continue reproducing.
The Dragon Isles, the setting for the upcoming expansion, is a lush and pristine place steeped in elemental magic and the life energies of Azeroth. They once served as the breeding grounds of the dragonflights and the center of their kingdom when Azeroth was young. During the Great Sundering, much of the land’s magic was stripped away and the dragons were forced to leave their homeland in the care of the titanic guardians, who used the Beacon of Tyrhold to hide the islands from all outsiders. When a time would come when the elemental energy would revive and the dragons could come home, the Wardens would light the bonfire and reveal the islands to the world again.

The image gallery above shows the titanic guardians lighting the bonfire of Tyrhold and the dragons returning to the isles – stylistic borrowings from the creation of the earth intro in Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” are purely coincidental
After the jailer in WoW Shadowlands failed to withdraw the elixir of life from the world soul Azeroth to carry out his dark plans, it is in a regeneration process, which also renewed the “primal powers” on the dragon islands. The beacon of Tyrhold was rekindled and the dragons returned to the isles. In the Dragonflight expansion, the Alliance and Horde jointly dispatch the Explorers’ League and the Archaeological Academy to conduct a scientific expedition to the newly emerged islands. This is – in contrast to the similarly designed Mists of Pandaria – expressly not a military endeavor, as both factions join forces to found the Dragonscale Expedition.
