When it comes to American football in the video game arena, people generally talk about Madden NFL from EA. In the future, however, you will be drawn even more into the action – thanks to NFL Pro Era.
With NFL Pro Era, a new American football game has now been officially announced alongside the Madden NFL series – and that takes a completely different approach. The game is a VR title that was released specifically for PlayStation VR and the Meta Quest and lets you follow the gameplay from a first-person perspective. So you can become a quarterback yourself.
The newly announced and officially licensed title is being developed by StatusPro, a developer studio founded by former football players Troy Jones and Andrew Hawkins. Chief Executive Troy Jones was once a quarterback in NCAA Division I for Western Kentucky and Akron, and Hawkins was a wide receiver in the NFL for six years.
To mark the announcement, a first video was presented at the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, which you can watch below. This gives a first impression of what you can expect from the VR title. In it, you get to see the current star quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens, Lamar Jackson, who talks to his boys in the huddle and then goes to the line of scrimmage for the next play. There you can also adjust a play, depending on which formation the defense adopts. In the end, you then decide in the turn in the video for a long pass into the end zone.
The associated press release for the announcement states that you can lead your team to the Super Bowl in the available game modes or simply improve your quarterback skills in various drills. Virtual interaction with your friends in your favorite NFL stadium should also be possible.
Since the VR title is fully licensed by the NFL and also the NFL Players Association, all rosters will be represented in authentic form. The creators continue to promise an extremely realistic implementation that should give you the feeling of really being a professional athlete.
NFL Pro Era is the first fully licensed non-Electronic Arts NFL video game since 2004.
