A man swinging a machete at passing motorists in Toms River was tackled by a police officer and taken into custody after retreating into the woods when police arrived, authorities said Thursday. An officer spotted the man about 7:35 p.m. on Monday near the intersection of Brookside Drive and Route 37, according to Police Chief Mitch Little.
