Things are getting clearer for Matter, the unified home automation standard supported by Apple, Google, Amazon and much of the industry. Samsung is coming to announce a new “early access” partnership program aimed at manufacturers of home automation accessories.
It will allow companies to be able to test the compatibility of their first Matter products with Samsung devices compatible with the SmartThings hub and via the dedicated application. SmartThings is Samsung’s equivalent to HomeKit and is embedded in certain products such as Galaxy phones, televisions and household appliances.
Several partners have been cited for this program: there are big names like Aqara, Nanoleaf, Netatmo or Eve Systems. The list also includes Aeotec, Leedarson, Sengled, Wemo, WiZ and Yale. Samsung explains that it firmly believes in this new standard:
As a pioneer in the smart home industry from the very beginning, Samsung is confident that Matter will become the de facto standard in all smart homes around the world. That’s why Samsung has invested heavily in Matter, and will continue to do so.
This program therefore means that Matter-stamped devices are being tested. In view of the companies concerned, we can expect to see light bulbs, locks or switches compatible with the standard arriving on the shelves from the first day of the launch of the standard. Obviously, this new program is only a complement, and the manufacturers will still have to pass the official certification to have the right to display the small Matter logo.
The development of Matter is not going as fast as expected. The launch was scheduled to take place in 2021, but has been pushed back to September 1, 2022. The teams are busy fine-tuning their copy by reviewing the finishes of version 1.0, for example by ensuring stability and cleaning up the kit code of development.
