Over time, men’s eyebrows become huge and thick. Some men lose the majority of their hair, but that doesn’t include the hair in their eyebrows, ears, and nose, which seem to grow and thicken at an exceptional rate. Women do not have this kind of problem because their hair tends to thin out over time even though it has the same structure as men’s. Doctor Danilo Del Campo, a dermatologist at the Chicago Skin Clinic, set out to explain this phenomenon in the journal International Journal of Molecular Science.
How do eyebrow hairs grow in men?
You should know that all body hair grows from hair follicles. These follicles have three phases: the growth or anagen phase; the transition or catagen phase and the dormant or telogen phase. It is important to know that when the follicles reach the third stage, the hairs eventually fall out and the process begins again in a loop.
But the hairs on different parts of the body grow in a different way because of the different durations of the phases. For example, hair has a much longer anagen phase of up to 7 years, while eyebrow and nose hair is just 2 weeks.
The hormones that cause this excessive growth
As men age, they develop high testosterone levels. This hormone would therefore be the cause of these huge masses of hair, reports LiveScience. Moreover, hormones influence the duration of the different phases of the follicles. Because of this, the hair follicles are the most affected by this. Men therefore have a higher level of androgens to grow hair and body hair faster.
During adolescence, this androgen is responsible for hair growth on various places on the body and as men age, this hormone promotes hair growth in places where the anagen phase is shorter. However, testosterone does not have the same effect on the scalp. Rather, it tends to shorten hair growth.
