This is an accessory that (future) Tesla owners will have to purchase separately. The automaker will no longer provide the Universal Mobile Connector bundle free of charge with the purchase of a vehicle.

Tesla gets a small gift when ordering a new car. The mobile connector, which was previously provided at no additional cost with each vehicle, will have to be purchased additionally, in the car manufacturer’s shop. This accessory kit 2nd Generation includes everything needed to plug a Model X, S or 3 into a standard electrical outlet.

Modest use

According to Elon Musk, the use of this accessory was very modest. It provides 3.2 to 4.8 km of autonomy after one hour of charging. It’s not much, but it could help out in the absence of a Supercharger or charging station nearby. The boss of Tesla specifies in a tweet that the next version of the kit, whose stocks are currently sold out, will include more adapters for the sockets.

And that’s not all, since the price of this bundle will go from $275 to $200 (in France, it is sold for €340). Elon Musk also specifies that it will be easier to order the kit when ordering a model. He explains that the Mobile Connector is not necessary if you have a Tesla Wall Connector or if you use the brand’s Superchargers.

Despite everything, the billionaire indicates that it is recommended to install a wall connector (549 €) in preparation for the arrival of the vehicle. This isn’t the first time Tesla has removed cables and other charging equipment with its cars. Previously, the company provided Tier 1 and Tier 2 connectors with every order, which is no longer the case.

For the owner of the car, this disappearance is not good news, but for Tesla it is a way to save a little while the company struggles, like the others now, with the shortage of components.
