According to a recent report, free games on the Xbox can be monetized via advertising in the future. Microsoft is said to have been working on its own platform for a long time, which could be launched in the fall.
The magazine Business Insider (via Thurrott) refers to its own information, according to which Microsoft had already made corresponding considerations in 2018 and is now entering the concrete planning phase. Talks are currently being held with marketing agencies and advertising networks to define the sales channels and the technical basis.
If this platform works like advertising on websites, then companies will be able to buy ad inventory, which will then be displayed in the spaces designated by the developers. An advertising panel that stands on the edge of a racetrack is given as an example.
The news broke just before the Easter weekend, which I was taking full time off for, so I was able to take a look at the comments columns to see the predictable reactions. “I will not touch such games” and other negative comments were the norm.
That such a message initially triggers defensive reflexes and worries is completely normal. However, advertising has long been a reality even in paid games, or does anyone think the advertising boards in Fifa are only there for realism? In that sense I find the idea interesting. The developers themselves are also involved to a large extent in the implementation, who decide for themselves what they expect of their players.
The report also says Microsoft is at least not primarily concerned with sharing in advertising revenue. First and foremost, the Redmond company would look for new ways to make the Xbox platform more attractive for developers.
