Free Mobile has announced yesterday on Twitter an improvement in speeds on its 5G network of around 14%. This expected increase in bit rates is the consequence of the extension of the frequency band used by the operator to the 3.5 GHz band. Free previously only used 60 MHz, the update made official yesterday allows it to use the full 70 MHz available to it.

The company does not justify this initial underutilization, but it is good news for Free Mobile customers who rely on 5G. Even if the operator’s mobile network is mainly based on the 700 MHz band, which has the big advantage of wide coverage, to the detriment of speeds. This is why Free Mobile’s 5G network is nowhere near as fast on average as that of its competitors, even if it is more widely present in the territory, including in small towns and even in rural areas.

To increase speeds, Free Mobile is also deploying antennas on the 3.5 GHz band, like the three incumbent operators. And in this area it is not so far from its competitors, the four companies are all in a handkerchief.
