After learning that Apple retailers at New York’s Grand Central store began the process of unionizing this weekend, we shared new details about the group’s goals. Along with better working conditions, more vacation time, and better retirement options, the group is aiming to secure a $30 an hour minimum wage.
This weekend, the group launched Fruit Stand Workers United, which highlights efforts to unionize Apple Store Grand Central employees. They entered into the initial process of seeking an alliance. At this stage, 30% of Grand Central Apple employees will be required to sign cards in order to hold union elections under NLRB supervision.
CNBC’s Keith Leswing noted that a new video has been added to the Fruit Stand Workers United website outlining the unionization process, as well as a new section on specific improvements the group wants to see possible through the union.
In terms of salary, we are looking for a minimum of $30 for all workers built on a matrix based on role, tenure and performance. In terms of benefits, we are looking for more sustainable changes, such as increased tuition reimbursement, faster accrual and more leave, and better retirement options, including higher 401(k) eligibility ratios and enrollment in retirement plans. For health and safety purposes, we are committed to conducting a study of safety protocols in customer interactions, as well as a study of track dust, health effects of building materials, and noise pollution at Central Station.
In their mission statement, Fruit Stand Workers United explains the problem they see: “Year after year, the cost of living in New York has not kept up with our wages. Meanwhile, Apple has become the most valuable company in the world.”
