Early Monday morning, the Twitter account @ArmedForcesUkr (unconfirmed but referenced several times by the official account of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense) posted a set of images that appeared to show military equipment. The tweet roughly means: “Now everyone can see a wide variety of Russian launchers, ICBM silos, command posts and secret ranges with a resolution of about 0.5 meters per pixel. US technology website The Verge confirmed that at least one of the images in the tweet can be found on Google Maps, and it does depict an active Russian military site.
However, Google said that these are old images. “We haven’t made any changes to the way Russian satellite imagery is blurred,” a Google spokeswoman, Genevieve Park, said in an email. Although the images circulating online are likely to be legitimate, But they were already on Google Maps long before the Ukraine conflict.
