Earlier today, representatives of Sweden’s NATO Ambassador Axel Wernhoff and his Finnish counterpart Klaus Korhonen submitted applications to join Sweden and Finland to NATO. It all took place in Brussels and the applications were received by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said at a press conference in connection with the applications being submitted:
“It is a strong and clear signal that we are united. In recent months, it has become clear to many that Sweden and Finland’s security are closely linked,” said Magdalena Andersson when she announced during a press conference that the applications will be submitted jointly on Wednesday.
There is no information on when or if NATO will possibly approve Sweden and Finland as NATO members. It has previously been said that it can go relatively quickly, but in the last week there have been signals from Turkey that seem to be a bit cross-cutting, especially regarding Sweden’s possible membership in NATO.
