GTA’s messy cousin wants to reboot himself.

Last year we learned that the developers Volition press the reset button and restart the gangster saga Saints Row. We will go back to where it all began and build up the crime syndicate that has been involved in the entire game series. It turns out that it all starts with a strange interpretation of the sun-drenched and desert-dusty southwestern United States.

After a delay, the idea is now that the crazy adventure will land in our consoles and game computers on August 23, 2022. FZ has joined a so-called hands off preview event and got to see a first glimpse of pre-recorded gameplay. And we can probably state that it will probably be just as crazy as we expected.

“Tackle opponents so that their vehicles explode completely sonic”

The main character is in a predicament. When the companion comes to the rescue, she does so by driving her pimped car over a billboard, far up in the air. When you drive your vehicle yourself, you can perform a sideswipe attack to tackle opponents so that their vehicle explodes completely sonic. If you want even more fun on wheels, the task is to lock an enemy in a bajamaja, attach it to a wire behind the car and go around and smash tents in a field. All to the sound of the enemy’s whining and rippling feces.

You will probably notice where it barks. Total chaos, a lot of humor and more arcade than simulation. That is my perception of what I have seen so far. The developers say that in terms of tone Saints Row closer to the third game than the second. However, a little more serious moments are also promised, to build relationships between characters and create an understanding of them. In addition to laughing, we should also be at least a little engaged.

“The game is about conquering territory and building different business opportunities”

The world itself must be large and full of details. The developers say that there are lots of things to collect and place in their headquarters. Side assignments, such as assisting in the event of a spontaneous bank robbery, are an additional source of income. A large part of the game is about conquering territory and building various business opportunities on vacant plots around the city, which in turn leads to even more different types of side missions. There is also a lot to discover that has no direct connection to the game’s scurrilous action. For example, musicians who play on the streets, someone who fines for speeding and so on. Promises of a living world, quite simply.

Saints Row also learn to act as bubbling spring water for anyone who is thirsty for expression. 100 different emotes are promised, and there seem to be plenty of opportunities to tailor personal clothing styles, mecha with cars and even modify their weapons. As we have seen before.

“The whole game can also be played in co-op with a friend”

And then some quick information bombs about gameplay that the developers released during the event: you collect experience points when you play and can invest in different skills and passive abilities. These can be changed during the game via the mobile phone. The factions have different strengths and weaknesses, and you can, for example, choose to strengthen your protection against fire before you enter a situation where you are expected to be exposed to just that. The whole game can also be played in co-op with a friend. It is then possible to jump in and out seamlessly in his game. If you complete a mission in your polar bear’s game, you get the rewards and can take with you to your game. You can later select voters to skip that assignment when you get there in your campaign.

So, what does FZ think about new Saints Row? Of course, it is always difficult to form a good opinion when you have not been able to finger the hand control yourself. But like this from the sidelines, I think Saints Row looks promising. As GTA: s more freaked out little brother. If it turns out to be as grand and varied as the developers promise, and if they get just a little bit of script-heavy weight among all the crazy nonsense, then I think friends of open world have reason to lick their lips during the late summer.

The game will be released on August 23 for Xbox Series X and Series S, Playstation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Playstation 5
