Apple will present the iPhone 14 in less than 4 months and a lot of information is already circulating. Price, release date, design, technical sheet or even camera and number of models… we offer you a complete point before the official announcement.

The announcement of a new iphone by Apple remains an event and it’s been going on for fifteen years. The iPhone is still today the Apple brand’s flagship product and it is preparing for a sixteenth generation. The presentation of the iPhone 14 should take place in a few months, but the rumors of the corridors are multiplying; so that we can already have a rather precise idea of what Apple has in store for us.

After a 2021 vintage marked by the release of the iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max; we take stock of the iPhone 14 which will soon accompany the iPhone SE 2022.

Still four models, but a new strategy

Apple offers us four different iPhones for two years, ranging from the “classic” model to the Pro Max, passing through the “mini” and the Pro. With its mini version, the Cupertino company has tried the experience of offering a high-end and very compact model. An idea against the tide of Android competition which has deserted this segment in favor of large models. If theiPhone mini clashes, he never really convinced and the rumors of abandonment quickly arose. This compact device survived into 2021, but it should disappear in 2022 to make way for another model.

In 2022, Apple says goodbye to the mini version

The apple brand should always offer four new models this year. The main difference with previous generations would be the presence of a new non-Pro iPhone 14 instead of the iPhone mini. A logical choice after the commercial difficulties of the latter, which should help the Californian firm to better counter its rivals under Android.

To accompany the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro MaxApple would therefore bet on a iPhone 14 Max.

Design: two screen sizes and a few changes

With the disappearance of the mini, it’s a whole series that Apple will have to rethink, well almost. The approach would ultimately be rather simple with two ranges and two different screen sizes. The “classic” iPhone 14 would offer a screen of 6.1 inches while the “Max” variant would peak at 6.7 inches.

Same observation for the Pro versions with a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro on one side and a model 14 6.7-inch Pro Max the other. In recent weeks, dummy model molds have made it possible to see more clearly and to imagine the size of the different iPhone 14s.

The more observant will have noticed a possible size change at the photo block level back. If we are going to come back to this a little later – when we discuss the photo part of these smartphones -, the photo blocks on the back of the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max would be thicker. From diagrams shared by Max Weinbach on Twitterthe block of the iPhone 14 Pro would present a thickness of 4.17 mm against 3.60 mm for that of the iPhone 13 Pro. The “hump” of the Pro Max model would evolve in the same proportions; confirming a trend of overweight at Apple for a few years (2.79 mm for the block of the iPhone 12 Pro Max).

Thicker, it would also be bigger on this 14 Pro Max version; dropping from 35.01 x 36.24mm on the 13 Pro Max to 36.73 x 38.21mm. In total, the new model would have a total thickness of 12.02 mm against 11.25 mm for its predecessor. If that doesn’t seem like much to you, it should be noted that adding a case will tend to make the smartphone even more imposing. Finally, we expect comparable dimensions and if we don’t know anything about the weight of future models; we recall that the current iPhone 13 Pro Max displays 238 grams on the scale.

Notch or no notch? That is the question

At the front, the main question concerns the notch and it is rumored that Cupertino is planning some changes. Since its appearance on the iPhone X, its presence has divided and rumors have multiplied with each new version. This year 2022 should, for the first time, mark a real break between the “classic” and Pro ranges. After a 20% reduction on the iPhone 13, the notch would disappear on Pro and Pro Max models.

The manufacturer would opt for a smooth transition by offering a double punch on its Pro range. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max would be equipped with a classic punch to house the front camera and a “pill” to accommodate the FaceID sensors. This solution would give the brand the opportunity to turn the page of the notch, without losing functionality and to follow the latest trends. On the other hand, the two “basic” models would not yet be affected by this design change.

These developments have been mentioned with insistence for several weeks by several sources, including Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. However, a doubt still remains on the final design and the models concerned. What to spare the suspense before the official announcement?

Apple would also be tempted to do evolve the chassis of its iPhone 14 Pro by offering a titanium frame. This material would replace stainless steel on these models, following in the footsteps of some Apple Watch and Apple Card. Already mentioned for the current generation, the vapor chamber could make an appearance This year. This change would be to keep the iPhone cool, while the smartphone has a powerful chip and 5G connectivity.

The technical sheet: pay attention to the differences

The components are, for the time being, relatively spared from leaks. We expect to find a new chip for successor to the A15 Bionic which equips the iPhone 13, SE 2022 and the iPad mini 6. It’s not really a scoop to think that Cupertino will present an A16 Bionic chip, but there are a few interesting elements. First of all, Apple would confine itself to a fineness of engraving of 5 nm (like the A15 Bionic) and would therefore not immediately switch to 3 nm engraving.

The other persistent rumor is that this chip will be reserved for Pro models, according to Ming-Ching Kuo. The Apple specialist ensures that the new A16 chip would only equip the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. The “non-Pro” versions, namely the iPhone 14 and 14 Max, would retain the current A15 chip and this would not be the only difference. To support the SoC, Apple would offer 6 GB of RAM across its entire range with a subtlety, however. The Pro models would carry LPDDR5 while the classic models would be entitled to LPDDR4X.

On the connectivity side, the 5G is now de rigueur on the iPhone and we expect to find a Snapdragon X65 modem from Qualcomm. The iPhone 14 would also benefit from a Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, the latest generation of wireless connection. It is gradually gaining a place in France and in particular in the boxes of Internet service providers; with improved throughputs as a result.

The screen is also at the heart of rumors and differences are once again to be expected. Unlike the first color noises, the four iPhone 14 models should not benefit from a 120 Hz screen. The technology ProMotion would remain reserved for the “Pro” versionslike on the iPhone 13.

More recently, we learned that the iPhone 14 Pro will have a improved Lightning port. The current connector offers performance comparable to that of USB 2.0 (i.e. 480 Mbit/s) while the new Lightning would offer speeds close to those of USB 3.0 Speeds would be up to ten times higher (5 Gbit/s) s) to allow Apple to solve the main problem currently facing creators. Indeed, the current Pro models can handle large files (4K videos encoded in ProRes), but they are limited by their connectivity.

Regarding the iPhone with a USB-C port, the rumor is more present than ever. Nevertheless, the first models would not arrive until 2023.

The camera: a wind of change?

Apple must appear well in the photo against its rivals under Android. It is in this area that the iPhone 14 will seek to distinguish itself with interesting novelties. Information about the design evokes the presence of thicker photo blocks and this would be explained by the changes made by the manufacturer.

The entire range would be entitled to improvements and as often, the Pro models will be in the spotlight. This year the wide-angle sensor would increase to 48 megapixels (compared to 12 megapixels currently) on the high-end variants.

This clear progression would be accompanied by the ability to record in 8K, in addition to taking higher definition shots. Apple would use the pixel binning technique to improve the quality of images taken by its smartphones; especially in low light.

The other modules, namely the telephoto lens dedicated to zoom and the ultra wide-angle, would remain at 12 megapixels.

When will the iPhone 14 be released?

As usual, the pricing policy and the release date are not the most subject to leaks. If we refer to Apple’s habits, we can think that the iPhone 14 will be presented in September 2022. Marketing should begin a few days later.

As a reminder, the iPhone 13 range was presented on September 14, 2021 for marketing on September 24.

What price for the next Apple smartphone?

No information has filtered, but we expect prices comparable to those of the current range. Today, Apple offers the iPhone 13 mini at 809 euros and the iPhone 13 at 909 euros, while the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are respectively offered at 1,159 euros and 1,259 euros. Note that these are the starting prices for each of these variants.

The end of the mini model and the appearance of an iPhone 14 Max could however lead Apple to revise its price list somewhat. According to information from Ming-Chi Kuo, this new model would be sold for around 900 dollars in the United States. For your information, the iPhone 13 is currently displayed at $799 and the iPhone 13 Pro at $999.

We can therefore expect a price around 1,000 euros for the iPhone 14 Max. The iPhone 14 would then become the most affordable model (around 900 euros) while the Pro versions would remain the most expensive.
