In fact, the SEC has been aware of the vague metrics Twitter uses for years. Musk’s relationship with the SEC has not been good, though. He has expressed disdain for the SEC on several occasions, including calling the agency a “short sellers get rich commission” on Twitter in October 2018. In July 2020, he said, “SEC, a three-letter acronym with the word in the middle referring to Elon’s.”
Musk has shelved a $44 billion acquisition of Twitter over fake accounts, he said the deal could not go forward without addressing the issue. However, Twitter said it still expects the deal to close at an agreed-upon $54.20 per share.
