Customers of Tesla Inc. may appreciate the automaker’s convenient keyless entry system, but a cybersecurity researcher has proven thatTechnology could allow thieves to steal certain models of electric cars.
Sultan Qasim Khan, chief security adviser at NCC Group, a Manchester-based security firm, said:Effective hacking of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y would allow thieves to unlock the car, start the car, and accelerate away. By redirecting the communication between the owner’s mobile phone or key fob and the car,Outsiders can trick Tesla into getting into the systemmaking it think the owner is near the car.
Kasim Khan said that although he demonstrated the technology on a Tesla model,This hacking technique is not specific to Tesla. Instead, it’s the result of his tinkering with Tesla’s keyless entry system, which relies on the so-called Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocol.There is no evidence that thieves used this intrusion technique to improperly gain access to Tesla vehicles. Tesla has yet to comment.
