In October 2021, OPPO and Sharp jointly announced a patent cross-licensing agreement and cooperation, which covers the global patent licenses required for the implementation of communication technology standards in terminal products of both parties. Simultaneously,Both parties conclude patent litigation and disputes in multiple countries since 2020.

The acquisition of patents by OPPO from Sharp this time also shows the further cooperation between the two parties in the field of patents, and also highlights OPPO’s active patent strategy. In addition to filing and obtaining patents globally, OPPO has always been interested in purchasing high-quality patent assets. According to the author’s review, in May 2021, OPPO acquired at least 47 wireless communication patents from ZTE, covering base stations, terminals, networks and wireless communications, etc.; OPPO acquired a family of U.S. patents related to wireless standards, and almost at the same time, OPPO acquired a family of 4 video coding (H.266) patents from a Korean inventor. In addition, OPPO has previously had cooperation or patent transactions with entity companies or NPEs such as Ericsson, Sharp, Dolby, Inventergy and Intellectual Ventures.

After several years of practice, OPPO has formed a unique and efficient patent transaction model, which focuses on cutting-edge technology fields such as 5G communication standards, AI, imaging, and fast charging, and has the potential to purchase small batches from enterprises, research institutions or individuals. Public statistics show that in the field of 5G communication standards, OPPO has completed at least 4,600+ family global patent applications, and announced 2,000+ family 5G standard patents in ETSI; in the field of AI, there are more than 2,600 global patent applications, mainly in computer vision, voice Technology, natural language processing, machine learning, etc.; about 10,100 imaging patents have been applied globally, with more than 4,200 authorized; about 3,360 fast-charging patents have been applied globally, with a total of about 1,866 authorized.

It is worth mentioning that this transaction with Sharp is in line with OPPO’s previous focus areas and transaction habits, and once again confirms the accuracy and maturity of OPPO’s patent transaction model.

Thanks to its active patent strategy, OPPO has achieved good results. In the 2021 PCT international patent application rankings released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO),OPPO ranks sixth and has been among the top ten PCT applications worldwide for three consecutive years. At present, OPPO has distributed patents in more than 40 countries and regions around the world. The data shows that as of March 31, 2022,OPPO’s global patent applications exceed 77,000, more than 38,000 authorized worldwide. Among them, the number of invention patent applications exceeds 69,000, and invention patent applications account for up to 90% of all patent applications.
