The electric heavyweight Tesla Semi is giving itself the means to revolutionize the sector by its characteristics ensuring at least 800 km of autonomy and a powerful couple, without counting the possibilities of semi-autonomous driving which will allow circulation in convoy on the main roads.
Evoked in 2016, presented at the end of 2017, the vehicle has been the subject of a long maturation process and has already experienced several postponements, the manufacturer preferring to concentrate its efforts on the Tesla Model 3 and Y volume generators.
The Tesla Semi is supposed to be finalized but its production is not expected before 2023, among other projects like the Cybertruck or the new Roadster. In the meantime, several large groups have already ordered fleets of the vehicle, showing their confidence in the project.
Preparing new ground for heavyweights
If the production launch window is not yet confirmed, Tesla is opening reservations for its electric heavy truck, with a $20,000 deposit. Where the first electric trucks have short ranges and favor essentially intra-urban travel, the Tesla Semi wants to offer inter-urban travel capacity with fast battery charging.
If the project is experiencing a production delay, it is partly due to the new cell 4680 whose production is limited. Presented with great fanfare in 2020, it offers greater energy density and should help to lower the cost of batteries. It will also be the strong point of the Roadster…and similarly the cause of its postponement.
By opening reservations for the Tesla Semi, the manufacturer will be able to estimate demand and prepare for its entry into this new market, which is still not very busy, the question of technologies being crucial.
