Actually, Curseforge is a handy thing to manage WoW addons and keep them up to date. However, there was always a catch, the mandatory connection with the unpopular Overwolf app. That is now a thing of the past as the operator has now released a standalone version of Curseforge.
The Blizzard developers put a lot of energy and work into ensuring that WoW can be played and enjoyed entirely without addons. This has been the case in recent years various contents of addons taken over into the actual game and with the upcoming expansion Dragonflight even the complete interface is now being rebuilt. Nevertheless, the majority of players continue to use various WoW addons to make their lives easier.
There are a number of ways to keep this up to date. Download and install manually or use one of the various programs to do so. Curseforge is exactly such a program that simplifies the installation and updates all addons at the push of a button. Unfortunately, it has a big disadvantage, because Curseforge is not available without Overwolf – a rather unpopular program because it is permanently active in the background and useless for most players. But that no longer has to be the case.
Standalone version of Curseforge
As the operators of Overwolf and Curseforge have announced, they take the community’s demand for a leaner program for managing WoW addons seriously have a standalone version of Curseforge on the way brought. This should not only consume fewer resources, but also dispense with unnecessary functions.
- “We take community feedback seriously. Many of the community members voiced their preference for a leaner approach to managing mods. We’ve taken this into consideration and developed a standalone version of the CurseForge app on Windows, based on Electron, which you can download here (be sure to scroll down to “more download options” and click the drop-down on the windows option to see both versions).”
But beware: The link leads to the normal download page by Curseforge and Overwolf. If you really only want to download the standalone version currently in alpha, you have to scroll down further.
Under Curseforge Download Options you will find the Download tab in the Windows field. If you click on it, the tab will open and you can select and download the alpha of the standalone version.
This does not differ visually from the previous version, but is no longer linked to Overwolf. All connections in the settings have been removed. So you actually get a lean and simple tool for exactly one purpose: managing addons. What do you use to manage your WoW addons? Curseforge, another software or do you install everything by hand? Or are you one of those players who don’t use addons at all anyway?
