Looks like Black Mirror is making a comeback. Three years after the release of the fifth season of the sci-fi anthology, Variety reports that Netflix has announced the filming of the sixth season.

Details are still scarce, but apparently casting is already underway, which is expected to have more episodes than the three episodes of the fifth season. They are reported to be even larger than the previous ones.

Critics believe Black Mirror has run its course in recent seasons, and its earlier sharp criticism of where technology is headed may have subsided. But a long break between seasons could help the creative team come up with more impressive ideas and scenarios.

The long delay between seasons isn’t just for creative reasons (if that was indeed the problem). Black Mirror had to be delayed due to a rights issue. In January 2020, series creator Charlie Brooker and executive producer Annabelle Jones left their Endemol-backed production company House of Tomorrow.

The duo formed a new production company, Broke and Bones, which quickly secured a long-term deal with Netflix. However, Endemol retained the rights to Black Mirror, which resulted in Brooker and Jones not being able to release new episodes until they or Netflix made a deal with Endemol’s new owner, the Banijay Group.

Netflix will no doubt be delighted that Brooker and Jones are working on Black Mirror again. The company acquired the series, which debuted on UK Channel 4 in 2015. Since then, Black Mirror has won eight Emmys and numerous other awards, including Bandersnatch, one of Netflix’s first examples of interactive programming.
