We are probably only a few months away from the release of the future 4000 generation of Nvidia graphics cards, but unfortunately we must remain lucid about the state of the supply chain on this date…

For the past few weeks, we have finally witnessed a very slow but continuous drop in the price of graphics cards – a trend that we have not seen for a long time. So is it time to fall for a shiny new graphics card? Probably not… because a credible rumor suggests that the next generation of RTX 4000 GPUs could be announced very soon.

In any case, this is the opinion shared by the leaker kopite7kimi on Twitter. The interested party is far from being a lambda Internet user who gratifies us with a riddle thrown into the air. He is an informant who enjoys a reputation for consistency and reliability that is quite rare in this environment. He had notably distinguished himself on numerous occasions by his perfectly accurate announcements on Nvidia’s roadmap when the Ampere generation was released, which notably includes the RTX 30X0 cards.

Yesterday, he returned to the charge on twitter with two little words that did not go unnoticed: “Mid-July“, Where “in mid-July”, in response to the community manager of the VideoCardz.com site who asked him about the release date of the next generation. We could therefore be a few months away from this long-awaited release.

A curious timing

However, even if kopite7kimi is considered a reliable source, we must admit that the timing seems surprising. The date in question finds itself nestled halfway between two absolutely major events. On the one hand, Computex, the world’s high mass of hardware, opens its doors on May 24 in Taiwan. On the other, Gamescom, one of the biggest gatherings dedicated to video games, will be launched on August 24.

Will Nvidia therefore deliberately choose to organize its own event right between these two important deadlines, when the firm will also be one of the stars of Computex? It seems curious, but not impossible. It also seems unlikely that Nvidia will choose to save this announcement for Gamescom.

The suspense therefore remains almost complete, but it will therefore be advisable to remain on the lookout as mid-July approaches. Because the first rumors around the technical specifications of the 4000 series are already making you dizzy. For now, we’ve been treated to a few details about the power monster that the RTX 4090 will be.

Towards a new collapse of the supply chain?

Current rumors estimate that this card will pack 16,1280 CUDA cores, compared to 10,752 for the RTX 3090 Ti. It should also be entitled to a simply dizzying amount of RAM, with 24 GB of GDDR6X at 21 Gbps! Suffice to say that it will be necessary to plan the blow to feed this demonic machine.

Indeed, it will apparently be able to run at an incredible 450 W! That is an absolutely incredible energy budget that can greatly exceed that of some well-equipped whole machines. Gizmodo also recalls a rumor that estimated the TDP of the future RTX 4090 Ti at … 600 W. Simply insane.

According to kopite7kimi, the beast could be up to 2x more powerful than an RTX 30790. A statement that seems rather fanciful, but which says a lot about the move upmarket that we can expect from this generation.

In any case, if the card was well formalized in July, this would be double-edged information. Because even if the situation improves, it is simply inconceivable that the supply chain will be fully back to normal by then. The more the announcement becomes clear, the more we must therefore prepare for a cursed second generation in a row.

It already seems certain that all sellers without exception will experience stockouts at least in the first few weeks. And in this context, there is a good chance that prices will start to soar again. Good luck to those who have been waiting for their card for ages…
