Gamecity Hamburg is distributing start-up financing of €398,000 to six studios in the Hanseatic city as part of the prototype funding.

To ensure that finance ministers and senators do not even get the idea of reducing funding due to a lack of need, film and games budgets are completely exhausted as a standard. So it is a good thing that the Gamecity Hamburg awarding committee for the projects submitted for the prototype funding such a “high quality” recognized in order to be able to almost exhaust the budget of €400,000 available for 2022.

A total of 18 studios, startups and solo developers applied for start-up funding. Unlike other country programs, the Gamecity Hamburg checks do not have to be repaid.

The funded studios and projects at a glance:

  • Tiny Roar: hexagons (strategy adventure game) – €80,000
  • Super Crowd Entertainment: Great party verses (minigame multiplayer app) – €80,000
  • Bestjack Entertainment: your skateboard (Card game) – €70,000
  • Pseudoscience Interactive: Alchemy (build-up game) – €70,000
  • Symmetry Break Studio: prospector (2D Adventure) – €70,000
  • Denise Cook: Monster Songs VR (virtual rock musical) – €28,000

The awarding committee consists of Nina Müller (Goodgame Studios), Jonas Hüsges (Daedalic Entertainment), Valentina Birke (Super Crowd Entertainment), Jens Unrau (Hamburg Authority for Culture and Media) and Dennis Schoubye (Gamecity Hamburg).

Dennis Schoubye, head of the Gamecity Hamburg location initiative: “We see a positive dynamic in the quality of the applications for prototype funding. We also see positive effects from other funding programs such as our Games Lift Incubator and our new event format ‘Pitch Level Up’. Three of the funded projects come from teams and developers who have previously successfully completed our Games Lift incubator. In addition, there is a good mix of projects from start-ups and games studios that are firmly anchored in Hamburg among the funding recipients.”

The application phase for the next round will start in spring 2023.
