Pure electric power and internal combustion engine power have completely different requirements for passenger car platforms. For the former, it is necessary to reserve enough space for the battery pack to achieve considerable endurance, and it is also necessary to consider how to arrange the cooling circuit of the battery and the motor. When designing a new platform, car manufacturers must make it clear whether to give priority to pure electric or both gasoline and electric, the latter will affect the efficiency and battery life of pure electric models. The Mercedes-Benz MMA platform is not exclusively for pure electric vehicles, but priority is given to pure electric models, and internal combustion engine models are the ones that compromise. MMA is scheduled to debut in 2024, corresponding to Mercedes-Benz’s various A/B-class cars, such as GLA, GLB, CLA and other models – why should the internal combustion engine be taken into account in 2024? Christoph Starzynski, vice president of Mercedes-Benz in charge of electric drive research and development, explained: “The cost of pure electric vehicles will continue to rise. We will have to face this problem in the next few years, so we need to subsidize (tram) with other models.” Mercedes-Benz, a big business, cannot give up the internal combustion engine. It is reasonable for BMW to hold on to the internal combustion engine and not let go. For traditional car manufacturers, it is not profitable to engage in pure electric vehicles, even if it is like Tesla.
