Reports by Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg over the past week have claimed that Apple could switch iPhones from Lightning to USB-C for charging as early as next year. Now Kuo doubling further about this announcement and that Apple will also transition its other Lightning products, including AirPods, to USB-C in a similar time frame.

USB-C AirPods, iPhones and more

As for why Apple finally released an iPhone with USB-C, Kuo explains that the company’s original goal of ditching ports entirely proved too ambitious. Kuo and other sources initially reported that Apple intended to release an iPhone without a charging port as early as 2021, and while it is still testing such a product, it is unlikely to be released anytime soon.

Today, Kuo explains that an iPhone without a port “will cause more problems due to the current limitations of wireless technology and the immature MagSafe ecosystem.”

Today, Kuo reveals that along with the release of iPhones with USB-C, Apple will also release new USB-C versions of its other products that currently charge via Lightning. These will include AirPods, Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse accessories for Mac, as well as a MagSafe Battery Pack accessory for iPhone.

“Other products with a Lightning port (such as AirPods, Magic Keyboard/Trackpad/Mouse, MagSafe Battery) will also move to USB-C for the foreseeable future,” explains Kuo.

Sight

Essentially, today Kuo is reporting that Apple is slowly but surely going to begin the process of phasing out the Lightning connector on all of its products and accessories. When Apple Senior Vice President Phil Schiller first introduced the Lightning connector in September 2012, he explained that Lightning would become Apple’s charging standard “within the next decade.”

One possibility that I don’t rule out is that some Apple accessories are actually transitioning to USB-C before the iPhone. This will help encourage more people to buy charging cables and USB’C blocks before switching to iPhone in 2022.
