On April Fool’s Day, Twitter announced that it was working on an edit button. Although at first it looked like a joke, it is no longer the case. In addition to Twitter confirming that it’s working on the feature, at least two reverse engineers have revealed that the feature has already been implemented. Here’s what we know about it so far.
April 1 developer Nima Ouji posted that Twitter was actually working on an edit button, now confirmed by a reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi.
So far, they’ve both been able to discover that when you’re writing and posting a tweet, you’ll be able to click the three dots above the post on the web and select Edit Tweet. At the moment, you can edit the entire post, although it is not possible to update what has been written.
Ouji was able to provide some information about this upcoming feature. For example, at the moment it doesn’t look like users will be able to change the audience of a tweet once it’s been edited. In addition, this feature will be exclusive to Twitter Blue subscribers.
How long users will have to edit a tweet, or whether Twitter will freeze quote retweets, or whether it is possible to retweet is unclear. So far, the company has just started implementing the edit button in the web version, since none of the reverse engineers wrote about this feature for iOS and Android devices.
In addition, Twitter continues to work on the Circle feature, which will be somewhat similar to Instagram’s Close Friends feature, as well as a revamped profile page. Release dates are still unclear. Not only that, the company is in the middle of a storm as Tesla CEO Elon Musk plans to buy the entire platform.
