As the number of COVID cases in China is on the rise, the local government is once again imposing a quarantine on the country. This time, a new quarantine in the city of Zhengzhou jeopardizes the operation of the main iPhone factory.

According to Bloomberg, Chinese authorities announced on Friday that areas of the Zhengzhou Airport Economic Zone were immediately quarantined. As a result, people cannot leave their homes until further notice. The report notes that the area is home to the largest iPhone manufacturing plant, which is owned by Foxconn. In recent days, the company has required employees to undergo mandatory COVID testing.

Both Foxconn and Apple did not respond on how the blocking would affect operations. However, this is not the first time Apple has been affected by lockdowns in China this year. Foxconn suspended operations in Shenzhen last month due to another lockdown following the COVID outbreak.

There, the Taiwanese company also has factories responsible for assembling the iPhone and other Apple products.

According to analysts, recent lockdowns could result in the loss of 6 million to 10 million iPhone units. At the same time, production of devices such as the high-end MacBook Pro and the new 5th generation iPad Air has also been hit as estimated delivery dates have increased significantly.

Other Apple suppliers such as Pegatron and Quanta Computer have also ceased operations in eastern China, which will certainly affect Apple’s product inventory as well.
