As revealed last month, Google Chat on iOS will let you specify which contacts can reach you in Focus mode. This applies to the dedicated Chat app and the integrated Gmail interface.
You can now specify which Google Chat and Gmail contacts you want to receive notifications from when your iOS device is in Focus mode. This is useful in situations where you need to limit screen time but don’t want to miss an important message when other notifications are disabled.
Introduced in iOS 15, Focus mode lets you control which people (and which apps) can contact you when Do Not Disturb or other user-created settings are turned on. It is marked with a pill with various available icons that appears below the time/date on the lock screen.
With this update, Google is also making other people’s profile pictures appear in chat notifications to “make it easier to see who sent you a message.” This is much better than just the appearance of the app logo.
Both of these changes are being rolled out and will be fully operational in the coming weeks. We haven’t yet seen them enabled on the devices we tested this morning.
