The great originality of Tentacular is, unsurprisingly, the replacement of hands by magnificent tentacles in a universe in cel shading. If at first glance, the manipulation of these appendages lacks precision, the grip is quickly refined and becomes pleasant. The entirety of each tentacle can be used to catch objects that pass between our legs. The ends are more precise, the base is more powerful, so you have to play with this aspect to solve the many puzzles that dot this title with omnipresent humor. Small amusing detail, for the impatient, it is possible to accelerate the speed of the dialogues via the menu, but also by tapping on the head of the character who speaks to us and who makes a small gesture to mark his astonishment.
Pretty, pleasant, the game is immediately fun and the puzzles follow each other well!
Having reached majority octopuswe are summoned by the mayor of The Kalma in order to integrate us into the life of the community. No one is unaware of our true identity, but the game humorously makes fun of the fact that we are only supposed to have discovered it recently. The fact is that our more than special situation is a godsend for the mayor of the city, who, with the help of an ingenious system, assigns us a job all found in the dump. It is following this first mission that the pitch of the game points the tip of its nose and that we discover an element on which the plot revolves. The story is nice with many notes of humor and the characters have a little crazy and endearing side that makes octopus fly.
In Tentacularno life bar, we are in a jigsaw puzzle all that is more classic. The city of The Kalma serves as a hub where the various protagonists offer us their missions. Each situation gives rise to a small succession of puzzles that must be solved with the help of our tentacles. This is done by moving objects, forming a structure or even by interacting with the decor. Once the problem has been solved, we must take a picture of it to validate our success. While it may seem easy, keeping a building in good condition to take the photograph can be a bit of a hassle, as there are often times when a cannon fires at it continuously. As the story progresses, new elements of gameplay appear and allow you to vary the resolution of the puzzles. We can, without too much spoiler, cite the appearance of magnets which are magnets allowing objects to be linked together. Each level has a timer for those who like a challenge, but there’s no urgency or practicality in rushing to solve the puzzles. It is also used to confirm that all the required steps have been followed.
The levels are quite restricted in terms of movement. Indeed, each puzzle leaves the player with a small area where it is possible to navigate, but generally speaking, we do not really need to move. Friendly to motion sickness, so you won’t have any worries with Tentacular. The city also offers a recreational play area where we can let our imaginations run wild using the various elements of the game. Some of the objects are available by default, the others are unlocked as our tentacles solve the puzzles. A good idea that makes you want to progress in the story.
Graphically, the game is successful. the cel shading particularly suitable for play VR and Tentacular no exception to the rule. Fruit of the editor Developer Digital which is not at its first attempt (we owe them the excellent Gorn which you can find the test here), we let ourselves be caught up in the quality of the game as a whole. It’s full of details we can manipulate, characters to interact with, and funny situations to create. For example, throwing a character into the water makes him take out his buoy! The audio universe as a whole is quite correct even if it lacks, to our taste, a more marked theme that could make it unforgettable (which was perfectly mastered by Katamary Damacy to name just him). Tentacular can boast of being entirely localized in French in the text.
To conclude, Tentacular is a successful bet for the team of Developer Digital. Pretty, pleasant, the game is immediately fun and the puzzles follow each other well. Clearly it’s the kind of title that is played in short sessions and while the story wraps up in less than 8 hours, the creative mode and overall feel of the game just might get you a few more hours in the game. the skin of a giant octopus.
