If electric vehicles can be attractive for their lack of polluting gas emissions, their instantaneous power and their powerful torque, one of the barriers to adoption relates to autonomy.
Some vehicles can already cover distances close to those of thermal vehicles, but there is a whole culture of electric driving to be acquired in order to really be able to take advantage of it and examples of frustrating experiences are not rare when it comes to cover several hundred kilometers (driving style, charging station, ambient temperature, etc.).
Nevertheless, technologies are progressing and the manufacturer Mercedes Benz wanted to demonstrate that it is already possible to travel great distances with current or near-to-be technologies.
He thus rolled out his concept Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX between the Swiss Alps and the city of Cassis via northern Italy and Monaco, more than 1000 km covered on a single battery charge.
The idea was to circulate the vehicle in real conditionswhether traffic or weather conditions, with different types of roads and up to motorways with a maximum speed of 140 km/h in Germany or close to the speed limits in the other countries crossed.
The Vision EQXX concept includes numerous hardware and software innovations and a very low aerodynamic coefficient, as well as special tires to limit the effects of friction.
To cover the more than 1000 km, it took the energy of the battery but also that of recovery obtained in the descents which allows a light recharge resulting from the energy of the braking.
The vehicle also has a roof made up of 117 solar panels supplying the 12 Volt battery necessary for the operation of the on-board system and whose energy is therefore not taken from the main battery.
The Vision EQXX’s electric motor system is highly optimized for maximum efficiency, around 95%, combined with a high energy density battery.
Under these conditions and with this set of technologies, the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX ended its journey with a battery offering still 15% chargei.e. 140 km of autonomy and with a power requirement of only 8.7 KWh / 100 km, at the end of a 1008 km journey completed in 12 hours with an average speed of 87 km/h.
