The history of video games is full of little anecdotes and History of Hyruland reveals (or reminds us of) another astonishing one. In 1992 for the release of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on super nintendo, a novelization of the game was released in Japan. Signed Katsuyuki Ozakithis adaptation (that you can check here) obviously took some liberties with the plot and the characters of the original game, starting with the name of the hero. If everyone knows that the name of the hero of the series The Legend of Zelda is Link, in fact, until very recently, this was not entirely true since at the beginning of each episode, the players were invited to name the hero by themselves. Link was then only a generic name supposed to make the “link” between the game and the player. The idea being that by naming it, the player took control of it and identified with it. So, as in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Katsuyuki Ozaki felt authorized to also attribute a name to the hero of the Legend for his novelization of the game. However, his choice is amazing to say the least. Indeed, if we believe History of Hyrulandin this novel, Link is called… Paul ! Can’t say it’s very epic- although…

Note that in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link is the official name of the hero of the game and it is impossible to change his name, allowing to create a more coherent mythology. We can think that this will now be the case for the following episodes; Find on this page some illustrations of the novelization of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past signed Katsuyuki Ozaki.
