The German indie game Imagine Earth has been available on Steam for a while. It is both a building strategy and a real-time planetary sim, in which the ongoing colonization of distant planets must be reconciled with the environment.

Imagine Earth is a strategy game by German indie developers Serious Bros., which was released on Steam on May 25th, 2021. The player has to build global civilizations on distant worlds. To do this, you harvest resources and produce goods in order to later establish space trade.

Imagine Earth is also a real-time planet simulation. While the development strategy part of the game gives the player the opportunity to explore and populate distant planets as a classic colony manager, one must also reconcile the progressive colonization with the environment of the planet. Because the player gets into the perpetual conflict between the profit expectations of interstellar companies and the impending climate collapse due to exhaust emissions and soil pollution. If temperatures continue to rise, the polar caps of the planets can sometimes melt and the colonies would be destroyed by rising sea levels.

Imagine Earth does well in the user ratings: A total of 78 percent of the user ratings are “positive”. This means that the indie title ends up with an average value of all reviews at “mostly positive”. This roughly corresponds to the Metascore image at Metacritic. Here comes the Steam title at one respectable Metascore of 78. Imagine Earth also only costs around 25 euros, so a spontaneous purchase could not only be worthwhile for genre fans.
