On May 12, 2022, Activision presented Blizzard in one Blog post the Diversity Space Tool. In the meantime, the contribution has been completely abridged and All information about the Diversity Tool has been deleted by the developers. The reason for this was the criticism that came from the community.
The program assigned Overwatch heroes like Ana points from 1 to 10 in various categories such as race, gender, body type, sexual orientation. Based on the resulting values, developers can see how diverse the character is compared to the ‘norm’. However, this didn’t sit well with fans, who felt it reduced a complex and important issue like diversity to algorithmic data to make the company’s games more compelling. Activision Blizzard apologized and clarified intentions.
Asmongold on the diversity tool debacle
Allegedly, the Diversity Space Tool is not used in Overwatch after all and is not used in other Blizzard games and possibly the entire games industry as advertised.
Twitch star Asmongold spoke out about the debacle, urging the company to stop making “political statements” to improve its reputation following the sexual harassment lawsuit and instead focus on developing games until the fans are willing to forgive them.
Once the reputation is ruined…
“I feel like there are people at Activision Blizzard who just can’t stand not patting themselves on the back for a week because they care so much about minorities,” Asmongold said.
“You have to say something about it. Stop talking about it. It’s a bad idea. You’ve been through all these bad things. Your company’s reputation is ruined. Do you know how Activision Blizzard can actually restore its reputation? Shut up and play games!” like Asmongold.
“Do that for three years and maybe then we’ll be ready to hear a different political statement. But until then I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want to be moralized by someone who does the could not safely store breast milk in his own company.” What do you think of the Twitch streamer’s statements? Write to us in the comments.
