Last week, we were offered to play the Teenage Mutant Turtles game from Tribute Games (Panzer Paladin) and Dotemu.
The preview will be quite short, as the demo made available only included the first two game levels. Six characters were playable, but no menu was present when the game was launched. The game was experienced during a session made with three local players, with two friends, one of whom knew the old animated series well and is a regular at games of the genre. As a reminder, the game is a beat them all based on the famous animated series of the 80s, Turtles Ninja : Scale Knights (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
First step, the choice of characters. Currently, there are six available: the four turtles, Master Splinter and April. For each, three characteristics are indicated: range, speed and power, each time with a star rating. The difference between two and three stars is quite small, but still felt a little.
Once this step is over, it’s time to start the game, offering a return to the 90s. Indeed, the game begins with an introduction very close to the style of the original cartoon. Everything is there: the artistic direction, the characters and emblematic places, the tone; it is superb. A special mention to the animations.
The tested levels take place in the television channel and in the nearby streets. On the program: castrate Footclan en masse, correct Beebop and Rocksteady and save Vernon. If you’ve played or seen gameplay footage of Street of Rage 4, it’s the same. the gameplay is almost the same, a classic of the genre, with standard hits, power hits, a special move that charges (via standard hits or taunt) and multiplayer hits. Everything is very fluid, the game responds well to basic commands. The gameplay seemed a little more basic to me for the attacks in solo than its big brother, because there are fewer special attacks specific to each character; however, each has slightly different basic attacks. Combined attacks, they are nice, but seem not easy to get out. However, the game was probably on easy, given the resistance of the enemies; so it was hard to test things.
To conclude, the gaming session went very pleasantly. Being two connoisseurs of the animated series, the artistic direction made us very happy. The game has a very good grip, is very beautiful, fluid and well animated. We were left a little unsatisfied at level the variety of moves available relatively easily, the combos with several being more difficult to pull off. It will be necessary to see on a larger portion and in higher difficulties. It will also be interesting to count the number of playable characters, because it’s nice to have variety and let’s not forget that there are crossovers with Batman, so… Anyway the fun is the. I can’t wait to be able to play it more.
Preview made on PC by Zekkangel with a version provided by the publisher.
