Tiny Tina, or Tina for friends, is well known to Borderlands 2 fans. After a remarkable appearance in the latter, she was entitled to her DLC. Then, this DLC was adapted as a spin-off. Now she has her own game with Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. But, will it touch the hearts of long-time Borderlands fans? This is what we will see in this test.

input, the game immerses us in the atmosphere. We find ourselves around a table with Tina, mistress of ceremonies, Valentine, adventurer imbued with her person and Frette, robot of her state. As a good game master, Tina invites us to fill out our character sheet in order to play her favorite role-playing game with her: Bunkers & Brutasses. And like in the spin off Tiny Tina and the Dragon Fortress, it is in this game that you will evolve. But first of all, you have to go through the step of creating your character.

The parallels with Borderlands will inevitably be numerous in this test because the title is inspired by it while improving it. And it starts with creating your character. Here, no predefined choice, you can create the character you want by giving free rein to your imagination. Even if we are far from what traditional RPGs like Skyrim can offer, the creation tool remains really complete. Once your hero has been created, or Bleusaille as Tina says, you must then choose a class and there we feel that we are in a real RPG. Six in number, these classes offer different characteristics and special powers. the Brr Zerker uses ice damage while the Stormstrike is more focused on electricity. Two classes, the defouromage and the Sow Death, are more focused on spells and magic. Finally, the sporoder is more focused on ranged attack while the Trucidopath is an assassin that deals high critical damage.

Rest assured, these choices are not necessarily final because it is then possible to mix two classes from a specific moment in history. Yes, Gearbox has thought of everything so that players are not necessarily confined to a class that ultimately does not please them.

Once this part is over, we are immersed in the heart of this very special role-playing game. And our first mission is to prevent the resurrection of the Dragon Lord. The first mission acts as a great tutorial like in Borderlands. However, we cannot prevent the return to life of the Lord and, suddenly, the true quest looms before us, we are going to have to send this filthy being back to where it came from. And there, now, the adventure can begin.

Your progress will allow you reach level 40 and unlock the mythic rank, with the Brutasse levels that go with it. The player is also required to change weapons regularly, and as we are in an ersatz Borderlands, weapons there are many, many and many, just like shields, rings and spell abilities.

From there, we are on conquered ground and it’s a pure joy to defourailler everything that stands in our way. If ever, you are not comfortable with this style of play, the title offers three levels of difficulty for a really pleasant result. And if you ever die, you have a few seconds to kill an enemy in order to regain your vitality. A feature called Saving Jet which above all allows you not to lose too much money. Because, this money is essentialon the one hand if you want to increase the number of ammunition you can carry, but also if you want to buy new items from the different dealers.

Before we dwell on the map, let’s talk two minutes about the graphics. If you don’t like cel-shading, move on. Gearbox has copied and pasted what Borderlands offers. However, we find that Wonderlands is thinner than Borderlands 3. The decorations are varied, that is to say that each zone has its own identity. We do not have no sense of repetitiveness. It should be added that the bestiary is also very varied between skeletons, gnomes or fish-dogsyou will come across a lot of little beasts, each more aggressive than the other.

Now let’s talk about this special card. To go from one area to another, you have to go through it. This map features a top-down view in a style reminiscent of Japanese RPGs. For some reason, our character and the NPCs have a big bobble head. The map evolves in real time, according to the will of the mistress of ceremonies, and it is possible to unlock side quests, bonuses and discover many places. By snooping around, we can find scrolls to discover a little history of the area, poems to collect cosmetics and lucky dice for equipment.

We are delighted to see mythical characters from the license like Ass Stallion or Clap-Trap. These may be small details but it clearly shows that Gearbox does not forget these first loves. Note that the VF is quite pleasant, the voices stick well to the characters. The music, on the other hand, is not repetitive and fits perfectly with the events you are experiencing. It should also be added that the title is playable in online or local multiplayer. In both cases, the enemies will be stronger but the loot will also be more interesting.

But then, does this game have any flaws? Yes, all the same, the perfect game does not exist. We can fault Wonderlands for being too talkative especially in the middle of a fight. Not easy to read when we are invaded by gnomes ready to fight. We can also blame him for not having offered more clinch phases. Here, the function is really limited to what is strictly necessary. And finally, we will blame him…well, no, nothing else in fact…

In the end, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a very good game. We could have some preconceptions because associating the Borderlands style with the RPG style could be complicated, but Gearbox is doing perfectly well. The game is rhythmic, the weapons flow in abundance and the humor is quirky or even completely black at times. In short, you will understand, with this title, you will not be bored.
