Conservatives in the populous German state of North Rhine-Westphalia were slightly ahead of their Social Democrat (SPD) rivals in an opinion poll published on Friday, just two days before elections in the bellwether state. In the survey conducted by the YouGov pollsters, 31% of eligible voters said they would pick the Christian Democrat (CDU) party of state premier Hendrik Wüst. Meanwhile, 28% said they would vote for the SPD, whose top candidate is Thomas Kutschaty. Recent polls by other institutes also put the CDU at 30 to 32% and the SPD at 28 to 29%.
