NASA with Buendea created virtual environment XOSS MarsXR, simulating Mars. It was created to train astronauts in VR who will land on the red planet.

A feature of the XOSS MarsXR environment was the engine on which it was created. This is Unreal Engine 5 developed by Epic Games. The company is known for games like Fortnite and the Gears of War and Unreal series.

Already, MarsXR includes a full Martian day, replacing each other, realistic weather conditions and gravity, 400 km² of the explored territory of Mars, as well as equipment used by NASA.

The developers also announced the release special editor, where anyone can create their own assets and write scripts. NASA and Buendea announced that they will select the top twenty developers and award each $70,000 per team. The application deadline is July 27th. Winners will be announced on September 27th.

The script can be anything. It can relate to both everyday issues of life on Mars and emergency situations. All selected assets and scenarios will eventually end up in the virtual environment itself, which will be used in the preparation of astronauts.
